A Couple Pieces

So today I started work on the staircase. I also took the advice to make my room a bit smaller. I'm going to need to brush up on my Zbrush skills now.

Laying Things Out

So I spent today in class laying out objects. I believe I have the very basic layout done. I didn't put in the very small details, like all of the wires and such. However, most of the big things are in there.

Learning Things

So I'm not entirely comfortable with Unreal 3. I've used Unreal before but it was 2004. So today before I get started on modeling objects, I wanted to load up Unreal and see what I could do. After playing around with it for a couple hours I'm getting comfortable with making materials, using diffuse maps, normal maps, and specular maps. I'm also getting the hang of decals and what I can do with them.

I will begin modeling later today. I'm trying to decide on what to model first.

Lists and Such

So I've made out a list and a schedule to get the first day off right. My lists of assets is:

Boiler

Pipes

Wires

Outlet

Doors 2-3

Step ladder

Ladder to “Attic”

Stairs

Grate

Railing

Lights

Storage rack

Fan

Vent

Drain

Toolbox

Wrench

Hammer

Screwdriver

Hose

Valves

Exit sign?

Garbage

Floor, Wall, Ceiling

Paint buckets

Breaker box

That's the main list that I wanted to post. Hopefully I'll be able to complete all of them within the time I allowed. I'm basically giving myself three weeks to model, three weeks to texture, two weeks to light, and the final two weeks to polish everything up.

Research

So after a few days of researching I've come up with a bunch of images that I like. I'm going to try and draw out the room so I can have the basic idea of what I want on paper. Also for others to see what I'm going for. It's hard for them to see the image in my head.

So here's some of the reference photos that I liked.

Worth 1000 Words?

So I can't seem to find a picture that I like enough to model. So I think I'm going to change my project a bit. I've been thinking of modeling a small scene/room. Right now I'm shooting for a kind of boiler room. I've been researching all day on various basements, boilers, and factory rooms. I think that I'm going to combine the ones I like.

Hopefully I can complete this room and import it into Unreal.

Starting Capstone Project

So I've been thinking about my capstone project. I've been toying with the idea of taking a picture and recreating it in 3D. Then, if there's enough time, putting that scene in Unreal and walking around in it. I'm trying to find the best picture and scene to do this with. There's a lot of stuff out there.
