Unwrapping Done, Moving On
So I've unwrapped all of my models. I'm starting to move on to texturing them. Unwrapping took a bit longer then I thought but I should be alright. I'm going to take your advice and mix things up a bit when I put my final scene together. For right now here's the start of my door.

Your doorway looks like its off to a great start. I like how you've done some general wear and tear. I think the grunge map you have is a really good base layer and you can now start developing some more localized wear in certain areas. Always keep in mind that human contact and general weathering from the elements can have a huge impact on your textures.
ReplyDeleteSome things that I would suggest are:
- Rust under the door handle and around the window frame
- Rubber marks from boots kicking the bottom corner of the door
- General dust and grime across the whole piece
- Some grafitti on the door or window may look good
- Large areas of paint peeling, dents or even bullet holes
- You can also try putting a sign on the door, or some stickers. Maybe something was on there before but now it's gone and you can see where it used to be. Could be another layer of paint underneath even.
Your on the right track.. just keep building on top of it. When you think your there.. take it one step further. Really pump it.
When I start texturing, I normally start with a base color or I'll use a really good photo texture depending on what I'm trying to make. If it's a painted metal I will start with the base paint color and put a rust layer underneath. I always use layer masks and I'll start revealing the rust underneath with custom brushes that are differnt textures and patterns. I find using custom brushes can be really efficient and make the process much easier. I'll use the brushes with a combination of photo overlays to achieve texture overtop and just start layering more and more. I'll use different layer styles to achieve the effect I want. Usually when I'm done I'll tweak the saturation on my layers and sharpen my textures as well. I'm sure you do a similar process but I just thought I'd share you mine.
Let me know if you have any questions.
